SUVs and crossovers may be the most interesting vehicle at the moment, but the sedans, especially the mid-size sedans, are always popular. The Japanese car manufacturer leads in this segment for years. The refreshed 2017 Honda Accord is once again one step ahead of the competition. It’s not easy to describe this car, but let’s say it’s the synonym for comfort, handling, and style. We can’t say it provides the best possible performance, yet it’s definitely on top of the segment.
2017 Honda Accord: Engine Options and MPG
Honda’s engineering department offers a wide range of drivetrains. You can choose between 4-cylinder, V6, hybrid, or even a plug-in hybrid setup, as well as between a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and a CVT.
The standard 2017 Accord comes with a direct-injected 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that makes around either 185 or 189 horsepower. This unit is available with manual and CVT only. In case you need more power, there is a 3.5-liter V6 mill, which is capable of delivering 278 hp, and it’s available with the automatic transmission as well. The hybrid is using a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder and two electric motors. There is a 1.3-kWh battery pack, while the EV model can’t be used over 60 mph. This powertrain delivers 212 horsepower.
Unfortunately for Honda, the stringent EPA regulations lowered the fuel economy of the new hybrid powertrain, so it’s now rated below 50 mpg. More precisely, it stops at 49 mpg city, 47 mpg highway, and 48 mpg combined. The gasoline models sport almost the best fuel economy in the class. For instance, the inline-4 with CVT stops at 27 mpg city, 36 highway, 30 combined, while the 3.5-liter powered Accord and automatic transmission achieve 21 city, 33 highway, 25 combined.
Refreshed Styling and Amazing Features
When it comes to the exterior styling, you will never see something that stands out from too much from the predecessor. The Japanese car manufacturer is very careful with that, so the new generation or refreshed model always resembles the previous. This time, they managed to make this sedan more dynamic and dramatic with the sloping rooflines and lowered roof. The redesigned hood looks more aggressive. The mighty grille and handsome headlights just complete the overall impression. We have almost forgotten to mention that the automaker added the 19-inch big wheels, but you will get it only with the 2017 Honda Accord touring trim level.
Things are even better inside. The amazing car sports clean, simple, but effective design and the best possible tech. There is plenty of room for both front and rear passengers, as well as the roomy trunk. What’s more important, the back seats can be folded down, which became standard for all trims.
Honda’s determination to offer a range of useful features in all levels (base included) is something that separates this mid-size sedan from the competition. The entry level 2017 Accord gets dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Pandora audio streaming and SMS text-messaging capability. There is also a multi-angle rearview camera, as well as LED taillights. In case this isn’t enough, you will have to pick some better equipped trim level. Depending what you need you may add navigation, infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an amazing LaneWatch system and lots more.
And now comes the best part of the story. The 2017 Honda Accord isn’t expensive at all. The base model cost a bit over $22,000, while the range-topping and the best Touring version starts at $38,830.
