Until now, Honda was very mysterious with the fifth-generation CR-V. The testing models have been spotted just several times, so we thought it will arrive as the 2018 model. Instead, the amazing compact crossover is coming as the 2017 Honda CR-V. And what’s even more surprising, the Japanese car manufacturer already released the first pictures and specs ahead of the official debut, which is scheduled for this December.
2017 Honda CR-V: New Engine and Better MPG
According to the carmaker, the redesigned Honda CR-V will offer two engines. The base LX model will use an old 2.4-liter inline-4 unit. Still, the engine won’t be completely the same, but revamped and boosted. It means it will have 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, and should deliver significantly better fuel economy. The rest of the CR-V lineup will use a new turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4. Yes it the one that made its debut with the new generation Civic. Still, in contrast to the Civic’s 174 hp and 182 pound-feet, the 2017 Honda CR-V will get 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. The carmaker hasn’t released fuel economy figures, yet they promised class-leading efficiency, and we believe them. Both engines will be paired a CVT only, but you can choose between the front- and all-wheel drive setups.
Redesign Details, Civic’s Platform
The exterior redesign made the new generation Honda CR-V pretty attractive. The manufacturer hasn’t done any drastic, so the SUV remained pretty recognizable for the potential buyers. Still, the front end looks pretty handsome, and features several new details. As you may notice, the new hood is a bit longer and more streamlined, while the grille sports more angles and plenty of chrome. The crossover gets the LED daytime running lights only, but if you want the LED headlights, this will cost you extra. Vehicle sports quite enlarged fenders, while the new alloys look really brilliant. Around back, the carmaker hasn’t change much. The hatch appears to be pretty the same as before. We just see the new taillights and more pronounced bumper.
The most important change is the new platform. The architecture is also borrowed from the new Civic, but this is the stretched version. This way, Honda’s best-selling crossover is getting a few additional inches in the in width, length and height, as well as a longer wheelbase. According to the automaker, there will be 1.6 inches more between the wheels, which will improve the leg-room for the second row passengers for a huge 2.1-inch. In total, there will be 40.4 inches of legroom in the back, which is the class-leading result without any doubt. The outstanding SUV doesn’t lack the cargo room either. There are 39 cubic feet available. This is an impressive and perhaps the best result in the segment.
New Technologies, Better Safety
CR-V’s new cab looks quite interesting and really premium, but also rather familiar. This is due the instrument panel and a steering wheel borrowed from the Civic. Still, there are some amazing features inside that make the crossover pretty luxurious. The new infotainment system is Android-based and uses a 7.0-inch touchscreen. It also sports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, as well as navigation system, which comes as an option only. However, there is a wide range of standard features like a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a proximity-key system with remote start.
The 2017 Honda CR-V gets a number of pretty useful safety features. The Japanese manufacturer clearly puts the safety on the first place, which is quite clear when you look on the list of the standard kit: collision mitigation braking, lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.
The new generation compact crossover seems to be a lot better from its predecessor, and this makes us to think about the price. Well, according to the latest reports the 2017 Honda CR-V will keep the base price very low. Let’s say it will start from $25,000.
