It’s quite clear that Acura was only buying some time with the updated ILX. The compact sedan needs to be completely redesigned, and what’s more important, Honda’s premium division is getting ready to introduce the all-new model. It’s not quite clear whether the fully redesigned car is coming next year or in 2018, but we are pretty sure it will arrive as the 2018 Acura ILX.
2018 Acura ILX: Performance
Acura is Honda’s luxury brand, but this doesn’t mean there is anything in common. The carmaker hasn’t said anything official, yet we already know that the 2018 ILX is getting Civic’s architecture. The chassis is highly modular, so it will also underpin the next Accord and CR-V. Still, it is more important the fact that the platform supports a range of engines. This is essential for the new generation Acura ILX because it’s getting a turbocharged version of Honda’s new 2.0-liter “Earth Dream” engine. If the rumors don’t lie, the mill will be able to produce around 300 horsepower. This is more than enough for the amazing performance of Acura’s smallest sedan. The awesome engine will be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions, likely the current 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Styling and Changes
We haven’t seen any testing model of the 2018 Acura ILX, so we can’t say for sure in which direction will go the styling changes. However, based on what we managed to read between the lines, the new generation compact sedan will largely resemble the amazing Acura Precision Concept. This will definitely move the focus on the front end that’s getting amazing lines and details. The future car won’t skip getting an impressive grille and headlights (at least a toned-down versions), as well as the similar profile. As for the rear end, well, we think it will be fit perfect to the new generation ILX, but it may be too bunchy for the sedan.
The attractive exterior styling attracts the potential buyers, but it’s not crucial. Because of that, the redesigned ILX should be both, handsome and useful sport sedan at the same time. Still, in order to become, well, more attractive car, the compact sedan needs to grow a bit. The new platform enables this, and we are sure that the 2018 Acura ILX is getting a notably larger interior.
Price and Arrival
Like we said, the carmaker has the plan to introduce the redesigned vehicle in late 2017 or early 2018. Since the 2018 ILX sports a number of changes, it is safe to presume that the price must go up. We think that the regular model could start from around $29K.
