Honda introduced the Civic Type R prototype at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, but this isn’t the car that we were expecting. No, we wait for the arrival of the all-new US-specs 2018 Honda Civic Type R. According to the newest reports, the amazing hatchback will become available in North America in the next six months. Now, the upcoming US model will have a lot in common with the car we saw in France. However, since we once again spied the camouflaged hatchback while it was testing its abilities, there must be some additional changes.
2018 Honda Civic Type R: Changes and Features
As for the exterior styling, we see no changes at the moment. The testing model uses exactly the same design, with ultra-aggressive kit. The front end features a massive bumper and handsome grille that melts into the LED headlights. It appears that the prototype sports 19-inch wheels with Brembo brake calipers in the rear and 13.7-inch discs at the front. Around back, there is an interesting three-pipe exhaust system and a rear wing, which appears to be a bit larger. The 2018 Honda Civic Type R rides on the new platform, and what more important, it is notably bigger from its predecessor. This will definitely have a positive impact on the interior. The cab will be roomier, but still in the sporty spirit as before.
More Power, Manual Gearbox
Under the bumpy hood, the top-dog hatch hides something rather familiar. It’s the same 2.0-liter turbo-four as before. Well, not completely the same, but significantly better. Except it is turbocharged, the engine features direct fuel injection and VTEC variable valve timing. Still, what’s more important, it gets more power from the current 305 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. No, there will be no 400 horsepower as some reports claim. The drivetrain will probably deliver around 340 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The 2018 Civic Type R will use a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive only.
Estimated Price and Arrival
The car manufacturer hasn’t said anything regarding the US debut yet, but we expect to see the 2018 Honda Civic Type R at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. The base price of the hot hatch will be around $30,000.
